COURSE MODULE DESCRIPTIONS: Fundamentals of Presentation Technology

Audio & Acoustics

  • Sound
  • Room Acoustics
  • Cinema Sound Systems

Beginning with the fundamental question, “What is Sound?” It’s important to understand the basic characteristics of this very subjective sensory experience so that we can understand how different rooms and different types of sound technology affect the listening experience. Then we’ll explore Room Acoustics, which provides an overview of the many ways that our experience of sound is affected by the room or space in which it’s heard. Finally, we’ll look at the various technologies and components that are used to reproduce the motion picture soundtrack in a movie theatre.

Projection & Media Transport

  • Projection / Imaging
  • Playback Servers
  • Standards
  • Security / Digital Keys
  • Acronyms

In this module, there will be an overview of the various technologies for delivering image content to the projector and the standards that we follow in order to maintain consistent quality. We discuss the various types of digital cinema projectors and their similarities and differences, and well as the light sources used in them. This is followed by a discussion on the methods for securing content delivery.

Networks, TMS, & Maintenance

  • Networks in Cinema
  • TMS (Theatre Management Software)
  • Preventative Maintenance

Digital Cinema is enabled by many technologies borrowed from the world of information technology (IT). This section reviews the different types of networks used in cinema applications, and how they interact and enable today’s cinema entertainment complex. Then we’ll look at the types of theatre management system (TMS) software that provides the brains and control center for the cinema complex. Tying all three course sections together is a short discussion of some of the most common – and critical – maintenance issues that must be addressed to assure the best possible cinema presentation experience.
